My art is made from a modified form of paper maché. Consequently, all of my art contains 100% post consumer paper. I primarily use junk mail, office waste and damaged/outdated books; the only paper that is not used is high gloss. The process of making the paper maché is to first shred the paper. Next, it is soaked it in water for several days to several weeks. The wet paper is then ground in a blender to make paper pulp. Some of the water is removed and the glue, clay and other fillers and binders are added. At this point the material is allowed to rest for a day. Finally, the paper maché is ready for use. Much like tribal artists who will use whatever materials they find on hand, I too will use materials that are readily available. In addition to using recycled paper, I also use recycled electronics, found metal, shells, buttons and molted feathers into my art.
